What we do

Where do we start….. ?

Food and nutrition

It’s where we started and it’s still what we do best. From growing organically to teaching cooking and baking skills- we care about feeding people with the best possible ingredients. We are a café with no menu!

Water

Nothing we do could happen without water. Women in Malawi walk for miles twice a day to carry back huge containers for drinking, washing, cooking and laundry. In 2017, life changed, as we raised enough money for our own borehole- a clean and reliable source of life for the whole community. And now….we don’t have to walk for two hours to get it!

Sewing

One of the first projects adopted by the CBO- 100% hand-stitched patchwork bags. Funds raised were split 60/40 between the individual and the CBO. Many thanks to our Japanese volunteers for your inspiration!

Micro finance

We have been trained in micro finance -which provides loans, credit, savings accounts and money transfers for those who would not normally have access to these things. Our members now have formal bank accounts and most have funeral insurance.

Nursery

One of the first projects that the UK team supported was our on-site nursery. We provide breakfast and quality early years education for the under 7s.

Our nursery is called BANA MBATOSI which means “They are all ours”.

Schools, University and colleges

We support children and young people by paying fees for school, training college and university. The only thing we ask for is that the young people attend regularly, work hard and contribute to the CBO by helping out during the holidays.

Training Centre and hostel

We started selling cakes and bread from our Karisa Bakery in 2012. Our fame spread and since then, we have been asked to train hundreds of others, creating amazing bread, cakes and pastries using village brick ovens. Our hostel, Hope Lodge, means our students can stay onsite.

Transport

Life changed again in 2019, when the CBO people carrier arrived. This means huge savings on taxis which we used in the past to get people to hospital, meetings etc. The CBO fund the maintenance and fuel, and pays our amazing driver, Blessings.

Room 3

It’s very difficult for most people to get to a clinic or hospital, even if they have the funds. In November 2018, the dream of Room 3 was born- a place where our community can come once a week and have access to a medical practitioner and basic healthcare advice. . Click HERE for more details
